Portola Redwoods State Park 3/30/08

Layering is your best bet when hiking here. When I arrived at the visitor's center at about 9:45 am it was 43 degrees. When we finished the hike at 2:00 pm it was almost 60. From Campbell it takes about 65 minutes to get to the park but it feels like you are light-years away! It is green, cool and shaded. The are tress that have fallen on the trails and have not been removed. The only one that caused any problem was a HUGE redwood that blocked part of a trail making it look like the trail ended. This caused some confusion as to where we were supposed to go. We ended up taking a slightly different way but got back on track and over the creek. Our 5 mile hike turned into 6 miles. Completely fine with me because it was so beautiful! If you are going any time other than summer you need to stop in at the visitor's center and check to see if temporary bridges are up so you don't have to wade through chest deep water to keep on track. Rob and Jeff weren't able to bike it because of the bridge issue. It was nice to have them join us!
